Nintendo President Dismisses Use of Generative AI in Future Games, Cites Pedigree and Copyright Concerns

Nintendo's President, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently made headlines by expressing his firm stance against the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in upcoming Nintendo games. In an interview with Tom's Hardware, Furukawa cited concerns surrounding both the pedigree of Nintendo's beloved franchises and potential copyright issues as his primary reasons for this decision.

Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that is capable of creating new content, such as art, music, or even entire video games. It has been hailed as a potential game-changer in the industry, given its ability to generate unique and engaging content with little to no human intervention.

Despite the potential benefits of generative AI, Furukawa remains skeptical, expressing concerns over how it might impact the pedigree, or the established reputation and quality, of Nintendo's franchises.

Nintendo's franchises have built their pedigree over time by the delicate craftsmanship of our developers, Furukawa said. We believe that allowing AI to generate games could lead to a dilution of that pedigree.

He also raised concerns about potential copyright issues that could arise from the use of generative AI, given the technology's ability to create content that might inadvertently infringe on existing copyrights.

Generative AI might create content that is similar to existing copyrighted material, Furukawa explained. This could lead to legal disputes, which we would like to avoid.

Furukawa's comments reflect a broader debate within the gaming industry about the role of AI. While some industry professionals see generative AI as a valuable tool that can streamline the game development process and foster creativity, others, like Furukawa, view it as a potential threat to the traditional game development process and the integrity of existing franchises.

Despite Furukawa's reservations, the use of AI in game development is not entirely off the table for Nintendo. The company has previously experimented with AI in games like Super Mario Maker, where AI was utilized to help design levels.
