Unmasking the Scam: The NVIDIA RTX 4090 is a Relabeled RTX 3080 Ti with Counterfeit Memory Chips

With each component playing a crucial role in the overall performance of a PC, it's essential to have accurate and trustworthy information. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous entities have seized on this complexity to perpetuate scams. One such scam has recently surfaced- the NVIDIA RTX 4090, which is simply a relabeled RTX 3080 Ti with counterfeit memory chips.

The tech community was initially excited about the NVIDIA RTX 4090, especially given the impressive specs that were touted. However, upon closer inspection, it has now been revealed that this graphics card is not what it purports to be. According to a report on Tom's Hardware, the card is a relabeled NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti with counterfeit memory chips.

The revelation came about after a curious user purchased the card and decided to investigate it further. The user, who goes by the name Dachsjaeger on a German tech forum, discovered that the card was a counterfeit after noticing that the memory chips did not match the official specifications.

The supposed NVIDIA RTX 4090 was advertised with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, but Dachsjaeger discovered that it only had 10GB of memory. Furthermore, the memory chips were not from Micron, the official supplier for NVIDIA’s RTX 30 series, but rather from another manufacturer, Samsung. This clearly indicated that the card was a counterfeit.

The graphics card also had a relabeled GPU. Instead of the GA102-300 GPU that would be expected in an RTX 4090, it had a GA102-225, the GPU found in an RTX 3080 Ti. The scam was further confirmed when Dachsjaeger ran benchmarks on the card and found that its performance was consistent with an RTX 3080 Ti, not the purported RTX 4090.

This scam serves as a stark reminder to consumers to exercise caution when purchasing PC components. It is essential to buy from reputable sources and to verify the specifications of the components before purchase. In the event of any doubts, it is always advisable to seek expert advice.

In the meantime, the tech community will be waiting with bated breath for the actual NVIDIA RTX 4090. It's expected to be a game-changer, boasting impressive specs and offering significant improvements over previous generations. But until then, consumers should beware of scams and always do their due diligence.
