Windows 11 buyers are seeing a familiar number return to laptop spec sheets: 8GB of RAM. That does not mean the Windows PC market has moved backward, but it does create a more complicated buying decision in the age of AI-branded hardware. According to a new Windows Latest report based on Lenovo OEM materials, some upcoming Windows 11 configurations with less than 16GB of memory are being treated as “Non-Copilot” systems even when the processor itself includes AI-capable hardware.

For everyday users, this distinction matters because Windows laptops are no longer separated only by CPU tier, storage size, and display quality. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC branding is tied to a package of requirements, and memory is part of that package. In practical terms, the Copilot+ label is increasingly a memory decision as much as a silicon decision. An 8GB Windows 11 PC may run standard Windows workloads, but it should not be assumed to qualify for the newer local AI experiences that Microsoft and PC makers are promoting.

What the reported OEM specs show

The Windows Latest item centers on Lenovo’s IdeaPad Vibe documentation, where configurations below 16GB RAM are reportedly categorized as “Non-Copilot.” The interesting part is that this applies even when the machine is built around an AI-capable AMD Ryzen platform. In other words, the presence of an NPU-capable or AI-marketed processor is not, by itself, enough to make a laptop a Copilot+ PC.

That is an important clarification for buyers. Over the last two years, PC marketing has leaned heavily on terms such as AI PC, NPU, TOPS, Copilot, and Copilot+. Those labels sound similar, but they do not always mean the same thing. A laptop can include hardware that accelerates certain AI workloads while still falling short of Microsoft’s full Copilot+ PC requirement set. Those features need a balanced hardware platform. CPU, GPU, NPU, storage, and RAM all matter.

That is why buyers should treat 16GB as the practical minimum for any Windows 11 laptop expected to last several years. It reduces paging, improves multitasking, and gives the machine more room for future Windows features. Even if a user does not care about Copilot+ today, the memory headroom can extend the useful life of the PC.

Buying advice for consumers and IT departments

If you are shopping for a new Windows 11 laptop, do not rely on “AI” wording alone. Check the RAM amount, confirm whether the model is explicitly sold as a Copilot+ PC, and look for the exact configuration rather than only the product family name. OEMs often sell the same laptop line with multiple memory, storage, and processor options. One configuration may qualify for Copilot+ branding while another does not.

For IT procurement, update purchasing templates to separate three categories: basic Windows 11 endpoints, AI-capable PCs, and Copilot+ PCs. That distinction will help avoid confusion when vendors quote low-cost 8GB systems alongside higher-memory models. It is also worth standardizing on 16GB for knowledge workers unless there is a clear reason not to. The price difference is often smaller than the support cost of under-specced devices.
