Microsoft Office on Linux has been a recurring wish for years, but the latest round of discussion is more practical than nostalgic. David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of the Omarchy Linux distribution and co-founder of 37signals, publicly asked Microsoft why Word and Excel still do not ship as native Linux applications. His point is simple: Linux desktops have become polished enough for many developers and technical users, yet Office compatibility remains one of the big reasons people keep a Windows machine or Windows virtual desktop nearby.
For IT teams and Windows enthusiasts, the question is not whether Linux can replace Windows overnight. It cannot for many organizations. The better question is whether Microsoft’s current business model still needs Office to be tied closely to Windows. Increasingly, the answer looks less obvious.
Why the request is getting attention now
A decade ago, native Microsoft Office for Linux would have looked like a direct threat to Windows. Today, Microsoft’s revenue center is much broader. Windows remains strategically important, especially through OEM PCs, enterprise licensing, endpoint management, and the large installed base of desktop users. But Microsoft 365, Azure, security services, Teams, OneDrive, and cloud infrastructure now drive much of Microsoft’s growth story.
That shift changes the calculation. If a Linux user is willing to pay for Microsoft 365, use OneDrive, authenticate through Entra ID, collaborate in Teams, and connect workloads to Azure, Microsoft still has a paying customer. From that perspective, Office on Linux would not necessarily be a concession to a rival platform. It could be another way to keep users inside Microsoft’s subscription and cloud ecosystem.
Microsoft already follows this cross-platform approach in other areas. Edge, Visual Studio Code, PowerShell, Defender tooling, and extensive Linux resources are available beyond Windows. Windows Subsystem for Linux also shows that Microsoft understands how important Linux workflows are to developers. The company has spent years making Linux easier to use from within Windows; the unresolved question is whether it wants the full Office desktop experience to follow users who choose Linux as the host operating system.
The web apps are useful, but the missing ten percent still matters
Microsoft 365 in the browser covers a great deal of everyday work. For basic documents, spreadsheets, presentations, comments, and collaboration, the web apps are often enough. That is why many users can already work from Linux, ChromeOS, macOS, or almost any managed browser environment.
The difficulty appears when “good enough” meets real-world Office complexity. Advanced Word documents may depend on features that are weaker or absent in the browser. Excel is an even bigger issue. Many businesses run important reporting, finance, operations, forecasting, and data-cleaning workflows through Excel files that have evolved over many years. These workbooks can include macros, complex formulas, external data connections, Power Query steps, Power Pivot data models, and assumptions built around the Windows desktop version of Excel.
That is the practical barrier. Recreating the Office ribbon on Linux would not be the hardest part. Matching decades of compatibility behavior, calculation edge cases, add-ins, automation, enterprise deployment requirements, and support expectations would be a much larger engineering and quality assurance commitment. For Microsoft, the issue is less “can this be built?” and more “does the Linux desktop market justify building and supporting it at Office quality?”
What it would mean for Windows estates
If Microsoft ever released native Office for Linux, Windows would not suddenly become irrelevant in business. Many Windows deployments are anchored by device procurement, management baselines, security controls, application compatibility, Group Policy history, Intune policies, endpoint detection, printing, line-of-business apps, and user support processes. Office is important, but it is only one part of the enterprise desktop.
However, a native Linux Office suite would create more flexibility at the edges. Developers, data engineers, security researchers, and technical users who prefer Linux could work with fewer compatibility compromises. Organizations experimenting with Linux workstations could do so without immediately giving up Microsoft 365 desktop fidelity. Some users who currently rely on dual-boot setups, remote Windows desktops, or a spare Windows laptop for Excel-heavy tasks might have a simpler path.
For Windows enthusiasts, this would also be a sign of how Microsoft views Windows in the larger ecosystem. Windows would remain a major client platform, but Microsoft could treat Office as a service that should be excellent wherever paying customers work. That is already true on macOS and mobile to varying degrees, although feature parity remains uneven.
What IT teams should do today
No native Linux Office announcement exists, so planning should stay grounded. If your organization supports Linux desktops, evaluate Microsoft 365 web apps against real documents and spreadsheets, not idealized demos. Identify which files require desktop Excel, which macros are still business-critical, and which workflows could move to Power BI, SharePoint lists, databases, or more maintainable reporting pipelines.
For users who need full Excel on Linux today, the common options remain a Windows device, a virtual desktop, a remote app, or workflow redesign. LibreOffice and other suites can be excellent for many tasks, but they are not guaranteed replacements for complex Microsoft Office files. Treat compatibility as a testing exercise, not a belief system.
The broader lesson is that Office lock-in is less about a file icon and more about business process. If a spreadsheet is acting as a database, reporting engine, and automation platform, the operating system is only part of the dependency. Whether Microsoft eventually brings Office to Linux or not, IT teams benefit from documenting those dependencies and reducing fragile, undocumented Office workflows where possible.
Bottom line
DHH’s challenge to Microsoft is notable because it lands at a moment when Microsoft’s incentives are more cloud- and subscription-driven than ever. Native Office for Linux could help Microsoft reach committed Linux users without necessarily undermining Windows. But the engineering burden, support expectations, and smaller desktop Linux audience make it far from guaranteed.
For now, Windows remains the safest home for the complete Office desktop experience, especially Excel. Linux users can do a lot with Microsoft 365 in the browser, but advanced Office compatibility is still where the platform gap shows. That makes the discussion worth watching, particularly for organizations balancing developer choice, Windows management, and Microsoft 365 standardization.
