Microsoft has confirmed that Office LTSC 2021, Project LTSC 2021, and Visio LTSC 2021 reach end of support on October 13, 2026. For partners, this is not just a product lifecycle reminder. It is a short-window customer risk conversation that should begin now, especially for organizations that chose perpetual Office because of regulation, offline scenarios, change-control requirements, or specialized device needs.

After the support deadline, these 2021 LTSC products will no longer receive security updates, reliability fixes, feature updates, or technical support. The applications may continue to run, but they will move into an unsupported state. That distinction matters: customers can easily mistake “still opens” for “still safe to operate,” while the operational and compliance risk changes materially once updates stop.

What changed

The affected products are the 2021 Long Term Servicing Channel releases for Office, Project, and Visio. These were designed for customers that required a fixed feature set and a traditional on-premises/perpetual licensing model rather than continually updated Microsoft 365 Apps.

The support retirement date is now the key planning milestone: October 13, 2026. From that date forward, customers using Office LTSC 2021, Project LTSC 2021, or Visio LTSC 2021 should assume they are responsible for the business risk of running software that Microsoft no longer services.

This is particularly relevant for partners because many LTSC deployments are not highly visible in day-to-day cloud management portals. They may sit on shared workstations, lab devices, production-floor computers, training rooms, virtual desktop images, or isolated environments. In other words, the customers most likely to be affected may also be the least likely to have a clean, centralized inventory.

Why it matters for customers

Unsupported productivity software creates several practical risks. The most obvious is security: if a vulnerability is discovered after end of support, customers should not expect normal security patches for these products. That increases exposure for documents, macros, add-ins, templates, and workflows that rely on Office applications.

There is also a compliance angle. Many regulated customers must show that business-critical software remains supported by the vendor or is governed by a documented exception process. Continuing to use unsupported Office, Project, or Visio versions can complicate audits, cyber insurance reviews, security assessments, and internal risk acceptance procedures.

Operational reliability is another concern. Over time, unsupported clients can fall out of alignment with newer identity, management, collaboration, and file-handling expectations. Even if the applications continue to function, the surrounding environment changes: Windows builds, endpoint security tools, document protection policies, browser components, file storage platforms, and collaboration services all keep moving.

Finally, there is an opportunity cost. Customers on perpetual Office do not receive the same ongoing improvements available in Microsoft 365 Apps, and Microsoft 365 Copilot is supported on cloud-backed Microsoft 365 apps rather than on-premises Office LTSC installations. For organizations evaluating AI-assisted productivity, staying on LTSC 2021 can become a blocker rather than simply a conservative licensing choice.

Default impact after October 13, 2026

Partners should frame the impact clearly. The software is not expected to uninstall itself or stop launching on the support end date. The change is in Microsoft’s servicing and support posture.

After the deadline, customers should expect no new product updates, no security fixes, and no standard technical support for the retired 2021 LTSC applications. Existing installations may remain in place, but they become legacy assets that require explicit risk ownership.

That means customers need to decide between three broad paths:

  1. Move users to Microsoft 365 cloud-backed apps and suites where feasible.
  2. Upgrade perpetual Office, Project, and Visio installations to supported 2024 LTSC releases where cloud options are not viable.
  3. Document and manage exceptions for any remaining 2021 LTSC footprint that cannot be remediated before the deadline.
The third path should be treated as a last resort, not a passive default.

Recommended upgrade direction

For enterprise customers, Microsoft is steering partners toward Microsoft 365 E3 as the primary modernization path. Depending on customer requirements, Office 365 E3 or Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise may also be appropriate. These options provide supported desktop apps while aligning customers with cloud-based servicing, management, identity, and security capabilities.

For small and midsize businesses with fewer than 300 users, the practical options are typically Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, or Microsoft 365 Apps for business. Business Premium will often be the strongest advisory recommendation where customers also need endpoint, identity, and security improvements, not just updated Office applications.

Project and Visio require separate attention. Customers using Project LTSC 2021 should evaluate Planner and Project Plan 3 where a cloud-based project management experience fits the requirement. Visio LTSC 2021 customers should evaluate Visio Plan 2 for diagramming scenarios that require the desktop app and cloud service benefits.

For customers that cannot adopt cloud-backed Microsoft 365 applications because of regulation, connectivity, latency, isolation, or technical dependency constraints, the supported on-premises alternatives are Office LTSC 2024, Project LTSC 2024, and Visio LTSC 2024. This does not deliver the same modernization benefit as Microsoft 365, but it can remove the immediate unsupported-software risk.

Partner action plan

The most important partner step is discovery. Do not assume customers know where Office LTSC 2021 is installed. Use endpoint management tools, software inventory, procurement records, configuration management databases, and customer interviews to identify Office, Project, and Visio 2021 LTSC usage.

Next, segment the estate. Some users may be straightforward candidates for Microsoft 365 Apps. Others may need add-in testing, macro validation, application compatibility checks, or network readiness work. Specialized devices may require a separate path to LTSC 2024 or a longer exception process.

Partners should then create a customer-facing timeline. With the deadline set for October 13, 2026, the safe plan is to complete discovery and decisioning early, run pilots, remediate compatibility issues, and finish deployment before the final support date. Waiting until the last quarter increases the chance that a simple version upgrade turns into an urgent security exception.

Commercial conversations should connect licensing to business outcomes. Microsoft 365 E3, Business Premium, Project Plan 3, and Visio Plan 2 are not just replacement SKUs; they change the management, security, and collaboration model. Customers will need help comparing cost, deployment effort, user experience, security posture, and long-term lifecycle management.

Partners should also call out adjacent dependencies. Microsoft notes that Microsoft 365 Copilot eligibility depends on cloud-backed apps in Microsoft 365 suites, and the Azure Information Protection labeling client for perpetual Office has been retired. If customers use sensitivity labels, data protection workflows, or are planning Copilot adoption, those items should be part of the migration discussion.

Bottom line

Office LTSC 2021, Project LTSC 2021, and Visio LTSC 2021 are entering the final stretch before end of support. Partners should treat this as an immediate advisory opportunity: inventory customer environments, identify migration constraints, recommend Microsoft 365 where possible, and use LTSC 2024 only where on-premises requirements are genuine.

The deadline is close enough to require action, but still far enough away for a controlled transition. Customers that begin now can avoid unsupported software risk and use the lifecycle event to modernize productivity, security, and management at the same time.
