Independent robot-driven laptop testing has raised an uncomfortable question for Microsoft: why can Microsoft Word appear to open a large document faster on Apple laptops than on new Windows 11 PCs? According to Windows Latest, PhoneBuff tested a 500-page Word document on recent MacBook, Surface, and Dell systems, and the Windows machines took roughly 12 seconds where the MacBooks took about 7 seconds.
That is not a disaster for day-to-day productivity, and it does not mean every Windows PC will behave the same way. But it is a useful signal for IT teams, buyers, and Windows enthusiasts. Word is not an obscure third-party app. It is one of Microsoft’s own flagship productivity tools, and Windows is still the default environment for many Office-heavy organizations. When that combination underperforms in a simple launch test, it deserves attention.
What the test appears to show
The Windows Latest report summarizes two PhoneBuff comparisons. In one, a MacBook Air with Apple’s M5 chip opened the same 500-page Word file in about 7 seconds, while a Surface Laptop using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus needed about 12 seconds. In another, a MacBook Neo reportedly opened the file in about 7 seconds, while a Dell XPS 13 with an Intel Core 5 320 and 8GB of RAM also took about 12 seconds.
The surprising part is not that Apple silicon is fast. Apple has spent years building a reputation for excellent responsiveness and efficiency. The surprise is that the lag showed up in Microsoft Word on Microsoft’s own operating system, including a Microsoft-branded Surface device.
There are several possible explanations. The bottleneck could be Office startup behavior on Windows, document parsing, font handling, security scanning, background services, device firmware, storage configuration, memory pressure, or a combination of all of these. It could also be specific to the tested file or test images. A single benchmark should not be treated as a universal verdict on Windows laptops.
Still, this is exactly the kind of small delay that users notice. Opening a large contract, policy manual, report, or technical document is a common business workflow. If a premium Windows laptop feels slower than expected at that moment, users do not care whether the root cause is Office, Windows, drivers, or OEM configuration. They simply experience it as a slower PC.
Battery life tells a more positive Windows story
The same report also includes better news for the Windows ecosystem. In PhoneBuff’s productivity battery cycle, which involved Word, Excel, text entry, copy-and-paste work, and music playback, both tested Windows laptops reportedly performed very well. The Dell XPS 13 lost less battery than the MacBook Neo during the productivity segment, and the Surface Laptop also drained less than the MacBook Air in a similar workload.
That matters. For years, Apple silicon has been the obvious reference point for mobile efficiency. If new Snapdragon and Intel Windows laptops can compete strongly in light office workloads, that is a meaningful improvement. Many business users spend far more time in documents, spreadsheets, browsers, Teams, and email than in sustained video exports or developer builds.
The practical takeaway is that modern Windows laptops may be improving where office workers actually live: unplugged productivity. But the Word launch result shows that battery life alone is not the whole user experience. Responsiveness, app startup time, and consistency still matter.
What IT buyers should do
For organizations evaluating new Windows 11 hardware, this is a reminder to test real workflows instead of relying only on processor branding or vendor claims. A procurement benchmark should include the actual Office files users open, the same endpoint security stack the company deploys, the same cloud sync tools, and the same add-ins.
Large Word files are especially worth testing. Templates, embedded images, tracked changes, macros, cloud storage locations, custom fonts, and document protection can all affect load time. If a pilot device opens a critical document slowly, try the same file with add-ins disabled, with security exclusions reviewed, from local storage instead of cloud sync, and after applying firmware, Office, and Windows updates.
For individual buyers, the conclusion is more balanced than “buy a Mac” or “avoid Windows.” The Dell system described in the Windows Latest piece appears to have strong battery life and hardware advantages such as display features and a touchscreen. The Surface result is more awkward because Microsoft controls more of that product’s experience and charges a premium for it. Either way, buyers should look beyond peak CPU claims and ask whether the laptop feels fast in the apps they use every hour.
What Microsoft should fix
Microsoft does not need Word to win every synthetic race. It does need Office on Windows to feel polished, predictable, and obviously optimized. If Word opens large documents faster on competing platforms in public tests, Microsoft should treat that as a product-quality issue, not a marketing inconvenience.
The company has been pushing Windows on Arm, AI PCs, Copilot+ branding, and new silicon partnerships. Those efforts will only persuade mainstream users if the basics are excellent. Office launch times, File Explorer responsiveness, sleep reliability, update behavior, and battery life are the details that define whether a Windows laptop feels premium.
For now, the PhoneBuff result is a useful reminder that benchmark results are not just about chips; they are also about software paths, defaults, and vendor priorities. Windows laptops are showing encouraging efficiency gains, but Microsoft still has work to do to make its own productivity apps feel first-class on its own platform.
