Microsoft’s September 2026 Patch Tuesday release for Windows 11 is more than a routine security drop. Based on Windows Latest’s hands-on coverage, KB5124008 moves Windows 11 version 25H2 to build 26200.9445 and version 24H2 to build 26100.9445, while also enabling several interface changes that many users have requested since Windows 11 first shipped. For IT teams, the message is simple: test KB5124008 with a deliberate rollout ring rather than treating it as a cosmetic-only update.

The most visible additions are the return of taskbar placement options, a Start menu that can be made smaller, and a Windows Search experience that can be configured to avoid web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Those features matter because they affect user training, privacy expectations, help-desk questions, and device consistency across fleets.

Taskbar flexibility is back, but policy planning still matters

Windows 11’s fixed bottom taskbar has been a persistent complaint for power users, multi-monitor workers, and anyone moving from a heavily customized Windows 10 desktop. KB5124008 begins restoring that flexibility by adding taskbar position choices in Settings. Users can move the taskbar to the top, left, right, or bottom through Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.

This is not a full return to the old Windows 10 model. Users cannot simply unlock and drag the taskbar around the screen, and Windows Latest notes that some options are limited depending on placement. For example, the search box and smaller taskbar variant are currently tied to top or bottom placement. That distinction is important in managed environments: if your organization documents desktop layouts, publishes screenshots, or supports remote users, expect some variability as the feature rolls out.

The smaller taskbar option is also worth testing on common laptop models. On compact displays, reducing the actual taskbar height can recover useful vertical space. On high-resolution monitors, it may simply create a cleaner workspace. Accessibility teams should verify that icon size, touch targets, and pinned app recognition remain comfortable for users who rely on larger visual elements.

Start menu sizing should reduce daily friction

The second major usability change is Start menu sizing. Windows Latest reports that Microsoft now offers Small, Automatic, and Large options, along with more granular controls for pinned items, recent items, and the full app list. This is a practical correction for users who felt the modern Start menu occupied too much screen space, especially on 13-inch and 14-inch laptops.

For organizations, this change has a subtle support benefit. A smaller, quieter Start experience for laptop users can make Windows 11 feel less intrusive without requiring third-party shell tools or unsupported registry tweaks. It also helps trainers produce cleaner guidance: instead of telling users to accept a one-size-fits-all Start menu, support teams can point them to a supported Settings path.

There is one caution: visual changes like this can affect screenshots in internal documentation. If you maintain onboarding guides, virtual desktop instructions, or self-service knowledge-base articles, review the images after your pilot ring receives the update.

Windows Search becomes more local and less noisy

The most consequential change for privacy-minded users may be Search. KB5124008 adds controls that let users turn off web search and Microsoft Store suggestions independently. When both are disabled, Windows Search focuses on local apps, settings, and files instead of mixing desktop results with Bing-backed suggestions.

That should make Search faster and easier to trust. It also aligns with a common enterprise preference: when a user opens Start and types the name of a tool, policy, spreadsheet, or setting, the operating system should not distract them with web content. Admins should evaluate whether the new options can be standardized through policy or documented for end users.

Windows is also expanding indexing behavior by automatically identifying frequently used folders. This can improve result quality, but it deserves review in environments with strict data handling rules, complex sync clients, or large local project directories.

Security and lifecycle items should not be missed

Although the interface features will get most of the attention, this remains a Patch Tuesday update. Windows Latest also highlights administrator protection rollout work, Windows Autopilot device-preparation improvements, Microsoft Execution Containers process isolation, and the removal of WMIC from Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

The WMIC removal is especially important for older scripts. If your monitoring, inventory, or deployment automation still calls wmic.exe, treat this update cycle as a deadline to move to PowerShell CIM cmdlets or other supported management interfaces.

Finally, note the lifecycle timing. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro are approaching end of servicing in October 2026, with Enterprise and Education editions supported longer. If you still have 24H2 systems in production, use this update window to confirm upgrade readiness.

Recommended approach

Install KB5124008 first on a representative pilot group: a small laptop, a high-DPI workstation, a shared device, and at least one machine with legacy administrative scripts. Validate taskbar behavior, Search settings, Start menu documentation, Autopilot workflows, and any WMIC dependencies. Once those checks pass, the update looks like a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for Windows 11 rather than just another monthly patch.
