For everyday users, this should make Windows Update feel less intrusive. For IT teams, it is a practical change that may simplify communications with users and reduce the number of productivity interruptions caused by maintenance prompts. The key point is not that Windows updates are going away, but that Microsoft is trying to make the restart moment more predictable.
What is changing in Windows Update
The new behavior applies to updates released on and after July 28, 2026, and covers Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. Instead of immediately requiring a restart as each eligible component update arrives, Windows can hold certain updates that need a reboot and install them alongside the monthly security update.
In practice, that means a driver update delivered through Windows Update, a .NET update, or a firmware update may wait quietly until the next monthly security release is ready. Windows then installs the eligible updates together and schedules a single restart, preferably outside configured active hours.
This matters because the Windows ecosystem has accumulated many update channels over time. Security fixes, servicing stack improvements, drivers, firmware, Microsoft application dependencies, and .NET components can all land on slightly different schedules. Even when each update is legitimate, the combined experience can feel chaotic if every category triggers its own reboot request.
Why fewer restarts are a meaningful improvement
Restart fatigue is real.
