Microsoft's MSHTML Flaw Exploited to Distribute Malware

Microsoft's MSHTML platform has been found to have a significant flaw that is being exploited by hackers to distribute the malware. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2021-40444, is a remote code execution (RCE) flaw in MSHTML that affects Windows 10 and other Windows versions.

MSHTML, or Trident, is a proprietary browser engine for the Microsoft Windows version of Internet Explorer. This security hole allows an attacker to craft a malicious ActiveX control to be used by a Microsoft Office document, which hosts the browser rendering engine.

The exploitation of the flaw is alarmingly simple. The attacker can use a specially crafted Microsoft Office document that, when opened, would download an HTML application infused with malicious code. This application is then automatically executed, infecting the host machine.

The threat actors initially deliver the malicious document via email. The document contains a lure claiming to be a 'DocuSign' document – a popular electronic signature service – to trick victims into opening it. Once the victim opens the document, the malicious HTML application is downloaded and executed without any further interaction from the victim.

Microsoft has warned that threat actors are actively exploiting this unpatched vulnerability. In response, the software giant has issued a series of mitigation measures to counter the exploitation of the flaw. These include disabling the installation of all ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer.

Despite the imminent threat, Microsoft has not yet released a patch for this flaw. The company has stated that it is still investigating the issue and will take appropriate action to protect its customers. This could include providing a security update through its monthly release process or issuing an out-of-cycle patch, depending on the severity of the vulnerability and the threat to its users.

Security firms and cyber experts have strongly advised users and organizations to apply Microsoft’s recommended mitigations and ensure their systems are updated with the latest security patches. Users are also urged to remain vigilant and avoid opening suspicious emails or documents.
