The student reportedly discovered the flaw while reverse engineering the Life360 app for educational purposes. They found that it was possible to retrieve the phone numbers of other users by manipulating the 'Get Circles' request, without requiring any authentication.

The breach raises serious concerns, as it reveals a significant vulnerability in the app, which could potentially be exploited by malicious actors. The leaked phone numbers could be used for various nefarious activities, including but not limited to, spam calls, phishing attacks, or even SIM swapping.

The cybersecurity student reported the flaw to Life360 on 17th January 2022, but he didn't receive any response from the company. BleepingComputer then reached out to the company on 31st January to further inquire about the issue. The company, in response to the news outlet, acknowledged the vulnerability and confirmed that they had patched the flaw and shut down the vulnerable endpoint on the same day.

Despite the swift action taken by Life360 to rectify the issue, the incident raises questions about the security practices of such companies. It is concerning that a widely used app, designed to provide security to families, displayed such a significant vulnerability.

Customers are advised to remain vigilant and regularly monitor their phone records for any suspicious activities. It's also recommended to consider using additional security measures, such as two-factor authentication, to secure their personal information.
