Cloudflare Attributes Recent Outage to BGP Hijacking Incident

The incident, which occurred on December 27, 2021, is believed to have affected a significant number of Cloudflare's services globally.

The BGP is a fundamental protocol used to direct internet traffic around the world. In the incident, a part of the internet traffic intended for Cloudflare was wrongly routed, or 'hijacked,' by another network, causing disruptions.

The issue began at approximately 11 AM UTC, and the company immediately acknowledged it via their status page. The cloud services provider noted an increased level of HTTP 522 errors in all regions, which indicated a problem in establishing a TCP connection to the origin server.

Cloudflare's engineering team quickly went into action to identify and resolve the issue, which they initially believed to be an internal problem. However, further investigations revealed that the disruption was due to a BGP hijacking incident.

BGP hijacking, also known as IP hijacking, prefix hijacking, or route hijacking, is a malicious practice where attackers take over groups of IP addresses by corrupting the internet's routing tables. This is done by misconfiguring BGP attributes intentionally, causing internet traffic to be redirected to another network.

In this case, the traffic intended for Cloudflare was wrongly directed to another network, causing a significant disruption of Cloudflare's services. The company has not yet disclosed the identity of the network that hijacked the BGP routes.

While Cloudflare's services were impacted, the company's engineering team proactively worked to mitigate the issue and restore normalcy. The team rerouted traffic and took steps to ensure network stability. They then monitored the situation closely to ensure no further disruptions.

By about 12:15 PM UTC, Cloudflare reported that they had resolved the problem and that services were returning to normal. However, they cautioned that some users might continue to experience issues due to the time it takes for the changes to propagate across the internet.

In the aftermath of the incident, the company has assured its users that it is taking steps to prevent a recurrence. The team at Cloudflare is working on enhancing their systems and is also in discussions with their transit providers to improve BGP security.

This incident underscores the importance of secure and robust network infrastructure. It also highlights the potential vulnerability of the internet to BGP hijacking, a concern that has been raised by several experts in the past.
