Microsoft Azure Information Protection (AIP) is currently undergoing a process of modernization and integration, with the ultimate aim of providing an advanced classification, labeling, and protection stack for customers. This will be achieved through the integration of Microsoft Purview Information Protection and Microsoft 365.
In line with this development, Microsoft has announced the end of sale for AIP Plan 1 subscriptions as of January 2024. This decision is part of the broader strategy to migrate customers to subscription plans that include Microsoft Purview Information Protection.
The AIP was initially designed for desktop/on-premises use with a downloadable desktop client. The native labeling and other classification and protection capabilities that are part of AIP are now included in subscription plans that feature Microsoft Purview Information Protection. These subscription plans include Microsoft 365 E3, Microsoft 365 E5 Information Protection and Governance, Microsoft 365 E5, Office 365 E3, Office 365 E5, Enterprise Mobility and Security E3 and E5, and Microsoft 365 F3 and Business Premium.
The removal of the AIP P1 standalone from the price list means that partners can no longer purchase new subscriptions for the offer. However, partners can continue to use existing or previously purchased subscriptions. This includes the ability to add seats to existing subscriptions and renew them to new terms.
This change will impact all customer segments, including Commercial, Small and Medium Business (SMB), Academic, Government, and nonprofit/charity.
In preparation for these changes, we recommend that customers and partners familiarize themselves with the resources available to understand more about the future of information protection. These resources include the AIP Unified Labeling add-in update blog, the Information Protection Modernization blog, the Microsoft Purview Information Protection in Microsoft 365 Apps - January 2023 blog, and the AIP to MIP playbook.
Additionally, plan comparisons with information on high-level features available per subscription plan can be found in the Enterprise plans and Business plans sections.
At Qloud Blog, we are committed to keeping you updated on all the latest developments and changes in the world of Microsoft. We understand that these changes may raise questions and concerns, and we are here to help you navigate through them. Stay tuned for more updates and information.
