In May 2024, Microsoft announced two significant updates that will impact Cloud Solution Provider partners in all markets. The first announcement pertains to the republishing of the new commerce license-based price list, while the second announcement relates to the launch of Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for SQL Server 2014.
On May 1, 2024, Microsoft published the new commerce license-based price list. However, a discrepancy was found in the column name "ERPPrice" which was different from the standard column header "ERP Price". To rectify this, Microsoft republished the price list on May 2, 2024, with the corrected column name. It is important to note that the data remains unchanged due to this republication. Partners are encouraged to download the republished price list to ensure they are working with the most accurate information.
In addition to the price list update, Microsoft also announced the launch of Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for SQL Server 2014. This is a significant development for partners and hosters as SQL Server 2014 will reach the end of its 10-year product lifecycle on July 9, 2024. To help customers stay secure while planning for a transition to more modern solutions, Microsoft will offer ESUs for SQL Server 2014 for up to three years.
These updates will provide critical security updates and will be available to Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) partners, CSP-Hosters, and Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA) partners. Customers will have the right to use licenses covered by ESUs on deployments on-premises or within outsourced environments running on Authorized Outsourcers. They can also apply ESU licenses to "license-included" workloads acquired from SPLA partners or CSP-Hosters.
Microsoft is offering two options for ESUs. The first is ESUs for SQL Server enabled by Azure Arc. This offering provides visibility of customers' entire SQL estate, automates repeatable updates and patches, and can enhance security and data governance with Azure services. The second offering is volume licensing SKUs of ESUs for SQL Server 2014, which will become available in the CSP catalog on June 1, 2024. This offering is ideal for customers who have SQL Server/CAL licensing model or customers from regulated industries where internet connectivity might be a constraint.
To be eligible to buy the associated ESU, customers will require a Software Assurance (SA) or an equivalent subscription. However, a customer doesn't require SA or subscription to utilize ESUs with license-included services purchased from CSP-Hosters.
Microsoft has also provided a planned ESU pricing list, although actual launch pricing might vary slightly.
In conclusion, these updates from Microsoft are aimed at providing partners and customers with the necessary tools and flexibility to stay secure while planning for the transition to more modern solutions. For more information about ESUs for SQL Server 2014, visit aka.ms/sql2014/csp.
