In a significant move towards enhancing user experience, Microsoft has announced the introduction of self-service purchasing options for Copilot, a feature set to roll out in October 2024. This new feature will be available to users of Microsoft 365 who have licensed through business suites, including Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium.
The self-service purchase feature will enable end users to independently purchase Copilot for Microsoft 365. Users can do this by selecting the 'Add Copilot to your Microsoft plan' link, which will be available on the Copilot for Microsoft 365 product page and the Copilot for Microsoft 365 webpage.
However, at the time of launch, purchases will be restricted to individual licenses, excluding full departmental purchases. This feature is designed to accelerate and streamline productivity tools for organizations, allowing end users to purchase products using their own payment instruments.
Self-service purchases also have the potential to send demand signals and provide customers with usage information from early adopters. This data could be instrumental in shaping their AI strategy and rollout.
Administrators will retain control over licenses in their tenant and can manage self-service licenses on the 'Billing > Your Products or Licensing' page. They can view license usage or take control of these licenses at any time. Admins will also receive a message center post T-30 from launch. In New Commerce (NCE), only billing account owners/contributors can manage licenses.
The cancellation policy for Copilot for Microsoft 365 offers users a seven-day window to receive a full refund. Full refunds are only available if the purchase or renewal is cancelled within 24 hours. For cancellations made after 24 hours, the refund will be prorated accordingly.
Partners are encouraged to discuss the new self-service purchasing feature with their customers to ensure awareness. At the time of launch, self-service purchasing will only be available for users that have a Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, or Premium license.
Customers have the option to temporarily disable end user purchases before a wider organization purchase is made, to prevent any duplicate licenses. Alternatively, end user purchases could help send demand signals and provide customers with usage information from their early adopters, potentially aiding broader sales.
